Portuguese literature, one of the earliest Western literatures, developed through text and music. Until 1350, the Galician-Portuguese troubadours spread their literary influence to most of the Iberian Peninsula.

Adventurer and poet Luís de Camões (1524-1580) wrote the epic poem Os Lusíadas, with Virgil's Aeneid as his main influence. The most important Portuguese epic work is undoubtedly the Lusiads, a masterpiece written by Luís Vaz de Camões, which was first printed in 1572. This epic aimed to highlight the heroism of the Portuguese people.
 
With a particularly popular and distinctive style is José Saramago, Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1998. This writer was one of the greatest figures of contemporary prose, is known for his controversial writing that had often subversive perspective and alternative historical events. Another striking feature of the work of José Saramago was the score and unconventional syntax, which gave a unique and experimental style to your writing.

The modern Portuguese poetry is rooted in neoclassic and contemporary styles, as exemplified by (1888-1935). Another inescapable author of Portuguese literature is the world-renowned poet, writer and journalist Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), considered one of the Exponential literary figures of the twentieth century. Fernando Pessoa developed an extraordinary style that encompassed not only the poet himself as well as several distinct poetic personalities dubbed heteronyms. These "other" poets - Alberto Caeiro, Alvaro de Campos and Ricardo Reis - had a voice, political views, age, profession, life philosophies and styles of own and singular writing. Person created a great work during his life in his voice and the voice of pseudonyms, remaining today as one of Portugal's most admired figures.

The modern Portuguese literature is represented by authors such as Almeida Garrett, Camilo Castelo Branco, Eca de Queiros, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, António Lobo Antunes and Miguel Torga.
